Indeed how different had he become President in 1948. The weakness displayed by the loss in Korea. Our continued involvement with a bungling and Feckless U.N., has cost many American lives, first in Viet Nam and now in Iraq.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8746692.post-1142485318247795512006-03-16T00:01:00.000-05:002006-03-16T00:01:00.000-05:00I had wondered why Senator Hagel was not at the Re...I had wondered why Senator Hagel was not at the Republican gathering in Tennessee.
You give a wonderful description of the event, thank you very much for that.
With any luck, the optimism that was shared for the future of American foreign policy will come to be, perhaps even with Chuck Hagel being elected President in 2008.Charliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09836878883695363300noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8746692.post-1142483901113803402006-03-15T23:38:00.000-05:002006-03-15T23:38:00.000-05:00Thank you for such a wonderful write up. When I was deciphering my notes, I was struck by my bubbles in marginalia which read: upon what basis this assumption? I remembered writing them, but I didn’t realize that they would all be following remarks made by Kissinger. The “serious men” comment was stunning.

Yes Hillary will have all the money, all the media, and nearly all of the important endorsements. I’m prepared for a bit of “shock and awe.” Is she a “centrist”? Who knows? Personally as a non-historian, I believe that many people in Washington care little about policy, and care a much more about whatever muddled lines will get them elected.

Recently, at the Council of Foreign Policy, General Clark engaged in a Q & A. One answer he gave to question about the Quadrennial Defense Review struck me. He said that Foreign Policy should not be dictated by the QDR, but unfortunately that is what has happened. He used the analogy of a drunk on a Friday night looking for fight. They always find them. The General also said that the current strategic framework is entirely wrong.

I wondered at the time, and still do, if any candidate in 08 would 1) understand his point 2) be willing to spend political capital to change that direction and 3) have the credentials to knock on the Pentagon door?

Thank you again. I enjoyed the conference and your fluid write up.

Donna Bozin~ MaineAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
