I think Israel and the Middle East may be more open to change than we realize -- Lebanon was instructive and Dubai certainly does not want to see the Persian Gulf up in flames -- and I think the shocking jolt that Obama's election will send throughout the world will do much to begin the process of changing perceptions of the U.S. Finally, I am thinking a very critical moment for Obama will be in the first "hundred days" -- he will have a Democratic Congress, but those chambers will be united by no common vision or even discipline -- I like to think there is now no Democratic party or Republican party, there are only those who dislike Bush and all he means (swaggering ignorance, values limited to "domination" and "aggression", and self-righteous piety) and has done (fiscally, diplomatically, militarily, environmentally, Constitutionally). But when Bush is safely forgotten on his ranch (I want to see how many times Fox News calls on him as an "expert" or "commentator" after January), then Obama has the scary task of quickly pulling together a plan of action that can put the hopes for change into some kind of reality. If he is not up to it, then the centrifugal forces already at play in the economy may finally spill over into the political world.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8746692.post-35897264359532201682008-06-02T11:58:00.000-04:002008-06-02T11:58:00.000-04:00I would love to think that the terrorist threat is...I would love to think that the terrorist threat is past, but consider that 8 years passed between the first attempt at destroying the WTC and the second.
