In the long run, of course, it threatened entirely to undermine dynastic authority and to destroy the legitimacy of existing European political institutions....Reason provided no obvious rules for redrawing frontiers, and it therefore might allow for almost any changes imaginable--all the more so since nationalism...had not developed any influence...."

all the best Bozonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18078858723231122013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8746692.post-15686265472931240212015-09-13T02:30:39.534-04:002015-09-13T02:30:39.534-04:00A splendid comment on western policies, as usual. ...A splendid comment on western policies, as usual. I would be very interested to hear what you think of the latest Russian moves on Syria, the establishment of two new airbases, the stationing of a nuclear missile submarine off the Syrian coast, the dispatch of marines to Syria. The call for talks with the US to avoid 'unintended incidents'. I find them deeply worrying.Rupert Chapmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07007234333289329849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8746692.post-39459880321240659832015-09-12T10:49:40.477-04:002015-09-12T10:49:40.477-04:00Thank you, Julia and Steven. And eventually, I'll discuss it in print.David Kaiserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05020082243968071584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8746692.post-10910463999721949502015-09-11T13:22:22.589-04:002015-09-11T13:22:22.589-04:00David, this is your best post....brilliantly done....David, this is your best post....brilliantly done. Puts so many things in perspective for this conservative. Well done.

It's remarkable to see how much stability in the world has been lost since the Cold War. It's taken a couple of decades to reveal itself...but it's out of the barn now.

Authoritarian rulers are actually a beneficial thing in certain parts of the world...as they relate to our security. In a strange way, and in retrospect, I now wish Saddam Hussein had not been toppled from power by the younger Bush. Hussein was able to keep Iran in check in the Middle East.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14093586972931925258noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8746692.post-48300429753948914662015-09-11T13:01:49.911-04:002015-09-11T13:01:49.911-04:00Thank you for your detailed, in a very short space...Thank you for your detailed, in a very short space, analysis of the history and future of the issues we face today. You are a rare bird - you seem totally devoid of any prejudice and are reporting on the situation the world finds itself in from a neutral position. It is difficult to see such a large picture with any sort of order, I appreciate your drill down to the base for it all.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10300450318929825005noreply@blogger.com
