As a teenager, he evidently had the severe diarrhea of Addison's, misdiagnosed as colitis -- that cannot have been fun for a rebel trying to wield his charisma. <br /><br />Over time, as the drugs multiplied, he must have gained some feel for how to manage his state of, shall we say, confidence and energy, by managing dosage, etc. Supposedly, he availed himself of the infamous Dr. Feelgood, from whom he may have gotten who knows what, laced with amphetamines.<br /><br />I'm not sure the daily humiliation of painful self-injection isn't better for someone in a powerful position, than actual good health. Certainly, it is harder to develop an unpunctured narcissism, when you have had to muster the courage to face daily pain and frequent threats of disability or death.
