The fascinating thing to me, about this moment, and what led up to it, was the existence of the Neutrality Pact of 1941, that made it possible in the first place.
That certainly was a 'stab in the back', even of the then Allies, by Stalin. Japan had joined The Axis, after all, in 1940.
The Wikipedia article slants it somewhat obliquely, it seems to me, so that this aspect does not so clearly emerge from the discussion.

Having read both the exerpt and the review it comes to mind that the review dramatically failed to match the eloquence of the exerpt.
