TV consumerism of 50s, Malaise of 70s, Obama coolness, Carter and inflation, stupid linear technical developments in music, culture, etc. without much deeper conssideration. No beatles, new wave madness. Anyway 2020/1 ought to have stress in store for us. But does it have to equal 1940ish extreme stress? I certainly hope not. People have gotten used to industrial life style, laziness. No extreme ideology or negative leaders seem on horizon. Clowns from left and right wings compete against intransigent bureaucrats of established parties. It is more like titanic sinking.
Who would fit zeitgeist of such a time but perhaps clown, disruptor Trump or reformer Bernie. They can't do much anyway. If all people do is complain and look at superficialities, not substance then we have lost our way. 'The vision thing' is the phrase I remember best about Bush sr. That says loads. Maybe about me. But he was practical, nuts and bolts communicative guy. 'Without a vision the people perish'. However our politicians with a vision have wrong one, no time, influence to accomplish it. So Xi, Putin understand that and consolidate power, give themselves a quarter century for reform. Western democracies aren't geared to that. So the bureaucrats glacially endure, control politicians. We talk of deep state. Pentagon, CIA are long winded. Corporations, lobbyists have long term plans, don't face voters. No wonder a businessman became president. He understands, manipulates the system better from outside. Crassius. Mr. Smith goes to Washington, ie the honest man trying to make a difference, is Trump, not career brown nosing politician. Truth to power comes not from within. Politburo members follow the rules. Bushes were like royals, they broke rules. Clintons are fake royals. Left and right have blood lines established. Switch crowns but bureaucracy holds sway. This is all too stream of consciousness. Sorry.
